Aurora, Colorado, founded just before the beginning of the 20th century, was mainly built around the military industry. At first, the city was named Fletcher after its founder, however, in 1907, it was then renamed Aurora. In 1921, Aurora was the selected site for the Fitzsimons Army Hospital to treat World War I victims. The area grew rapidly during the Second World War, and in 1942, it became home to Buckley Air Force Base. Shortly after that, the city also welcomed Lowry Air Force Base. With the start of the 21st century, the city began to shift away from its focus on the military and focused more on its medical accomplishments.
There are many fun things to do in Aurora; and for the golf lover, Aurora is a golfers paradise. The city has several terrific courses for people to choose among. Centre Hills Golf Course is one of these courses. One of the fantastic features, that this course offers, is a lighted driving range. The course, created in 1973, has a 9 hole, par-three course; and it is more than 1,300 yards long.
Another course that is surely worth visiting is Meadow Hills Golf Course. This course is quite a bit more difficult than Centre Hills. Built in 1955, the course boasts a par 70 course that is more than 6,700 yards long. Golfers will delight in the challenging course and the beauty of the course which is fully surrounded by lovely lakes and trees. Finally, no golfing vacation would be complete without visiting Fitzsimons Golf course. Built in 1939, this historical course was often visited by President Dwight Eisenhower, himself. This course is a bit challenging too, with a par 5 18th hole and 600 yard long course.
For those people, who do not golf, Aurora offers fun and excitement for them, as well. At the Star K Ranch, home of Aurora's Morrison Nature Center, people can experience the magnificent scenery and wildlife of the area. The Ranch has many different hiking trails for visitors to explore including the Sand Creek Greenway Trail. Jewell Wetlands consists of 50 acres of wooded wetlands and also offers hiking, as well as, a butterfly garden.
People, who are interested in Aurora's history, will want to visit Delaney farm. This historic barn sits on about 130 acres, and offers hiking trails to the High Line Canal, an organic garden and other historical buildings to explore. There are many more historical landmarks in Aurora including the Gully Homestead, the Centennial House, the American War Mother's National Memorial Home, the KOA Building, the Lowry Building, the Delaney Round Barn, the US Air Force Academy and the Aurora Fox Arts Center.
