Black Hawk
Description
Black Hawk, “The City of Mills”, is classified as one of the oldest cities in Colorado. Growing and prospering in a narrow ravine called Gregory's Gulch, this little town became an area where gold miners came searching and hoping for riches. Eventually most grew disenchanted and left Black Hawk. The town’s name, some believe, was gained from either a mill that opened in the area at the time, or from an Indian chief. Although troubled with natural upset like floods and over mining, the town continued to blossom, especially as a small railway was built connecting the town to Denver and Central City. As the railway expanded, the automobile also became an important vehicle for mining, milling, and tourism.
