Cripple Creek

Description

Vacation in Cripple Creek

Cripple Creek, a once historic mining town, is now a gambling mecca. Tucked in at the base of Pikes Peak, Cripple Creek is about an hour from Colorado Springs. Surrounded by the majestic Rocky Mountains, this town offers many attractions, casinos, and outdoor recreation. Although the boom of the Colorado Gold Rush put this town on the proverbial map of the United States, Cripple Creek is now packed with history, art, culture, and plenty of fun that keep people coming back every year.

Almost a century ago, this little mining community beckoned gold-seekers from all over. At the Cripple Creek Heritage Center, tourists will hear stories told through artifacts of the risky profession known as gold mining. There is also the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine where visitors can walk through the lung tightening tunnels and get a first hand experience at what it was like to search for golden treasures. After a day of hunting through history, the Butte Opera House is a welcoming and relaxing place where newcomers and repeat visitors can come to enjoy a show.

While in Cripple Creek, vacationers must take a ride on the Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad. Trains depart from a vintage 1894 depot, and will take passengers through old mining camps that showcase magnificent views of Pikes Peak. In Echo Valley this family owned train will blow its whistle, which visitors will find entertaining as wells as loud. For those looking to strike it rich, there are many casinos in the town of Cripple Creek. From slots to blackjack, poker, and roulette, Cripple Creek has more than a dozen casinos to help visitors hit the jackpot.

There are numerous events and festivals in Cripple Creek throughout the year like the famous Donkey Derby Days. Cripple Creek is special in the fact that the town's residents have donkeys that they love to race every year. The crowds cheer their favorites through a wacky course filled with apple bobbing and kissing cardboard saloon girls. Of course, while here visitors can't forget about the numerous outdoor activities that include everything from skiing to hiking. No matter the time of year, there is always something to do in the beautiful Colorado nature. When planning a trip to Cripple Creek one thing is certain, a repeat trip is necessary with so much to see and do.
