Durango: A Friendly Little City

Description

Vacation in Durango

Durango, Colorado is a small city nestled into the Four Corners area. It is located at 6,000 feet above sea level, but enjoys a fairly moderate climate. The Animas River has beautiful red sandstone cliffs lining it. You can also see the majestic peaks of the San Juan Mountains from Durango. The town is home to a narrow gauge railroad that travels to Silverton. Its residents have a reputation for being friendly and inviting.

Its origins date back to 1880, when the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad began to lay tracks. This project was finally completed in the summer of 1882. Gold ore and silver were originally hauled on this railroad. Over time, the railroad also began to carry passengers who wanted to see the beautiful scenery. A fire in 1889 destroyed much of the downtown area. The buildings were rebuilt in brick to prevent a similar disaster from happening again. In more recent years, the city has been a popular location for movies.

When you visit Durango, you're likely to want to take a ride on the train that travels to Silverton. The train is a fairly impressive sight, and has two types of cars to choose from. You can either ride in an open-air car or an enclosed car. The route includes the Animas River, as well as the range in the San Juan Mountains known as "The Needles". There are plenty of opportunities to get out and see the sights.

Don't miss the downtown area during your visit. There are so many historical buildings that you'll think you've stepped back in time. If Western art appeals to you, try one of the several galleries. In addition to the art galleries, the souvenir shops carry a lot of Western-themed items.

If you enjoy the outdoors, stop by Durango Mountain Resort, which is open all year. You can go hiking and easily enjoy the serene atmosphere. Several trails are devoted to mountain biking. If you feel really adventurous, try the Alpine Slide. The resort has several restaurants where you can enjoy a meal after an exciting day.

Several organized excursions are also available. You can easily go on a rock-climbing trip as part of a group. There are Jeep tours that allow you to see more scenery in less time. If you like, you can also go rafting on the Animas River. There is also a thrilling zipline tour that's intended for all ages.

You'll certainly want to try one of the restaurants during your stay in Durango. Some of the offerings include Mexican dishes that use authentic recipes. Other restaurants create entrees using local game, produce, cheese and beef. Francisco's is a popular Mexican restaurant with a long history. Stop by Serious Texas BBQ for authentic barbeque and Texas decor. If you'd like to see beer being brewed fresh, Steamworks is a good place to visit. Try Bar D Chuckwagon at least once for a hearty meal and cowboy show.

There are a few particularly noteworthy stores. D. Robert Smith Jewelry Design Studio and Durango Silver Company are good places to buy silver jewelry. If you're looking for other types of gifts or souvenirs, visit La Plata Gifts.
