Manitou Springs, Colorado, is a quaint and eclectic community that is situated in the foothills and valleys between Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak. The scenic and pedestrian friendly community is home to many sights and experiences that families can enjoy. Highlights include the historic Stagecoach Inn, the Mineral Springs, the penny arcade and the Cave of the Winds.
Manitou Springs sits atop a system of natural springs that begin in deep lying aquifers. A natural carbonation forces the water up through cracks in the rock where the water absorbs many healthy minerals. The area was considered sacred to the native Mountain Ute tribe, and a popular destination among early explorers. Like many western towns, it did not see much growth until a spur from Colorado Springs was built in 1881. The resort took off and by the 1890s was home to 7 hotels, many of which still stand today, as well as a number of smaller cottages and guesthouses. Guests were drawn to the area by the natural beauty and a chance to relax in the healing waters of the springs. In addition, tuberculosis sufferers sought the area out because of the springs and because of the mild and dry climate. Many of the springs still exist, and some of them are open for visitors to sample the tastes of the various mineral waters.
One of the early cottages is now known as the Stagecoach Inn. Some accounts say that the rustic building was a stage stop and then an inn, while other accounts say it began as the summer cottage of American author Helen Hunt Jackson. Throughout its history, it has served as the local electric company, home to the Manitou Springs Journal, and finally became the Stagecoach Inn. The rustic and cozy setting, as well as excellent food and service, brings many people back to the Inn again and again.
In the heart of Manitou Springs along Fountain Creek lies the historic Penny Arcade. This old-fashioned arcade is mostly open to the air and has not changed much over time. Many old games are available to play and most cost between ¢1 and ¢25. The machines are very well maintained and this is a venue that is certain to please children and adults alike.
Nearby attractions include the Cave of the Winds, an exciting underground adventure that should not be missed. The Jicarilla Apaches migrated through the area over 1,000 years ago and had legends about a cave where the Great Spirit of the Wind could be found. In the late 1800s, two brothers rediscovered the caves and exploration began. Families can now join in on the adventure with several different tours designed show off the grand rooms, deep caverns, serpentine tunnels and amazing geology of the Caves.
Manitou Springs is quaint, easy to get around, and full of attractions the whole family can enjoy. The experience in the historic canyons at the foot of Pikes Peak is one that should not be missed.
