Vacation in Pueblo

Pueblo, Colorado is located in the South-Central region of the state, a little over 100 miles south of Denver. Situated where the Arkansas River and Fountain Creek join, Pueblo's climate is semi-arid desert land. With a population of over 100,000, Pueblo is Colorado's ninth-largest municipal area.

Legend has it that the first permanent building in Colorado was erected by Lt. Zebulon Pike in Pueblo during his explorations. The establishment of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in 1872, combined with the discovery of abundant coal in the region helped to make Pueblo one of the West's major steel manufacturing cities. In fact, almost 150 years later, Pueblo is commonly referred to as the "Steel City," due to its standing as one of the United States' top steel-producing areas. The Steelworks Museum of Industry & Culture houses a massive collection of archived artifacts associated with, as well as serving as an homage to Pueblo's beginnings as a major industrialized region. But manufacturing is hardly Pueblo's lone "specialty."

Colorado's most-attended single event, the State Fair, is a Pueblo tradition every late summer. In conjunction, the largest parade in the state kicks off the fair. The annual Colorado Chili Festival also calls Pueblo home, and the Rocky Mountain Street Rod Nationals is one of the nation's oldest and best-attended events, attracting racing fans world-wide. Downtown events frequently involve the Sangre de Cristo Arts & Conference Center, which regularly hosts the very best in entertainment and corporate conventions. Adjacent to the Sangre de Cristo is the prestigious Buell Children's Museum. This much-honored facility offers unparalleled hands-on exhibits for every age group, but especially children. One of the favorite features of the Buell is the El Pomar Magic Theater where visitors can either take in the latest in cutting-edge film technology, or create their own production via "user-friendly" equipment.

Downtown Pueblo features the picturesque Riverwalk, a 32-acre meandering riverfront experience which includes boating, bicycling, fishing and well-maintained walking paths along the Arkansas River. Riverwalk also hosts numerous cultural and historic events throughout the summer and early fall. Pueblo's unique cuisine is also highlighted, most notably the locally-grown and world famous green chili pepper. This spicy delicacy is one of Pueblo's "signatures" and is honored annually each fall at the Chile & Frijoles Festival which celebrates the city's rich Hispanic heritage. For the more traditional palate, the bevy of family cafes as well as upscale restaurants along Riverwalk can satisfy any taste.

As a full-fledged Wild West city, Pueblo is a natural location for the corporate headquarters of the Professional Bull Riders Association. The PBR sponsors an annual Wild West Fest as well as holding its team finals championships during the state fair. Rodeos are also held regularly, always drawing fans in droves to the festivities, where a guaranteed rip-roarin' time awaits all attendees.

The city's Nature and Raptor Center has developed into one of the nations' most well-respected and most-visited establishments of its type. Rescued eagles, hawks, owls and other wildlife are on display, with an emphasis on conservation and preservation very evident.

Pueblo's historic roots are celebrated in the revitalized Union Avenue Historic District, especially at the El Pueblo Museum, which stands near the remains of the original El Pueblo Fort. Artwork, pottery and crafts, as well as photographs and other objects excavated from the region are on display to attest to the diverse multi-cultural makeup of Pueblo.
