Description
Beaver Creek, Colorado, is a ski resort located centrally in the Rocky Mountains along the I-70 corridor. Easy to access from the Denver metropolitan area this wonderful ski mountain is home to a variety of terrain, including areas perfect for families as well as a World Cup competition down hill course and extreme terrain. Located just west of Vail, it is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor but is worthy of attention in its own right. Beaver Creek is home to over 1800 acres of terrain that receives an annual average snowfall of 310 inches and claims 300 days of sunshine each year. Two gondolas, ten high-speed quads and several triple and double chairs service the 4,040 vertical feet of the mountain. Beaver Creek ranks highly among the skiing and riding community, and a reader resort survey in Ski Magazine listed in the top-ten in five categories including weather, grooming, family programs, lifts, and terrain parks.
Beaver Creek puts a tremendous amount of energy into their family programs and grooming, and the effort shows. A recent survey ranked Beaver Creek first for family programs and second for grooming. Groomers operate twenty hours a day, seven days a week throughout the season to consistently deliver some of the best-groomed slopes on the continent. Families and beginners will find what they are looking for in Bachelor Gulch. Home to a wide selection of beginner and intermediate terrain, this part of the mountain is regularly groomed to the highest standards and is naturally set apart from the more challenging parts of the mountain.
Beaver Creek is much more than groomers and has its fair share of challenging and pulse-pounding terrain. Each year Beaver Creek hosts a leg of the FIS World Cup on their infamous Birds of Prey downhill course. A long, thigh-burning and treacherously steep course, the best ski racers report that it is one of their favorite courses to ski. In addition, Beaver Creek is home to expert-only and extreme in-bounds terrain. These include the Stone Creek Chutes, Royal Elk Glades, Grouse Mountain as well as The Rodeo Terrain Park.
By staying to the far right of the ski resort boundary at the top of the mountain, skiers and riders will find access to the Stone Creek Chutes. This area consists of a series of gladed chutes that have a vertical drop of between 600 and 900 feet. In addition, these chutes are home to the steepest terrain at Beaver Creek, with some chutes reaching 45º. The Royal Elk Glades are accessed off of the top of the Grouse Mountain Express Lift and offer an excellent in-bounds experience for expert skiers and riders. Locals love the area for steep tree runs, open meadows and hidden pockets of snow. Another challenge for the motivated expert skier and rider is the Talon Challenge. This serious undertaking consists of skiing or riding the Birds of Prey downhill course, as well as all of the steep, bump-riddled runs on Grouse Mountain. All told, 23,000 vertical feet of thigh-burning adrenaline filled runs await those who undertake the challenge.
With such a diverse mountain and such high acclaim from its loyal visitors, it is a wonder that Beaver Creek is not more famous than it is.
