Copper Mountain
Description
Copper Mountain, Colorado, is a large ski resort along the I-70 Corridor, about two hours west of Denver. Encompassing three mountains and 2,450 acres of terrain, there is something for everybody at Cooper Mountain. The mountain has a comfortable balance of beginner, intermediate, expert and extreme terrain, most of which is lift served.
Copper Mountain prides itself on having naturally divided terrain, with beginner, intermediate, and expert terrain mostly contained on separate parts of the mountain. Visitors find this very appealing; as it makes it easy to find an abundance of the terrain they are after, often off of the same lift.
The Resolution, Alpine, Super Bee and Storm King Lifts, on the skiers right side of the mountain, give access to the steeps of the Spaulding and Resolution Bowls, as well as glades and long, plunging bump runs perfect for mogul fans and purists. This side of the mountain receives less traffic than other parts and has dozens of challenging runs to explore.
The American Flyer and American Eagle lifts, framing the center of the mountain, as well as the Timberline Express, provide access to a wonderful array of intermediate terrain throughout the middle section of the mountain. The terrain off of these lifts offers both groomed and ungroomed runs, as well as access to lifts that whisk skiers and riders to the upper reaches of the mountain.
The Union Creek area, serviced by the High Point, Kokomo and Lumberjack lifts, is ideally suited to beginners and families with young children. Offering a wide range of gentle and groomed green runs, this is a perfect and sheltered area for learning.
The Copper Bowl on the backside of Copper Mountain is renowned for its varied and fantastic terrain. A large amount of terrain is accessed from the Mountain Chief lift, including a wide selection of bumps and chutes. From the top of the lift, a long ridge entices adventurous visitors to explore further, by hiking or traversing the ridge-top. The effort is quickly rewarded, however, as numerous lines down steep chutes present themselves, as well as opportunities for cliff drops. Continuing further along the ridge brings access to a wide-open expanse at the head of the bowl, as well as access to neighboring Tucker Mountain. Tucker Mountain can be reached by ridge walk, or by hiking steep switchbacks up the face of the mountain. The effort is highly recommended, however, as the Tucker Mountain side of the bowl sees fewer visitors and offers an exciting selection of steeps, chutes and glades. In addition, a free snow cat operates during most winter weekends, taking visitors to the top of Tucker Mountain without the energy expenditure. While in the back bowls, take a moment to marvel at the splendor of the mountainous landscape, blanketed in the whitest of snows. Laying down pure turns with an impossibly picturesque background is an experience that brings skiers and riders back season after season.
Copper Mountain’s five terrain parks, a new 22’ superpipe make it a wonderful destination for park enthusiasts as well. Parks range from children’s parks to full-blown freestyle terrain. In addition, Woodward at Copper has a 19,400-sqaure foot indoor facility in which individuals can practice on spring floors, trampolines, slide rails and more.
The fun continues during the summer, as Woodward at Copper runs camps throughout the summer, and sections of the mountain remain open for mountain biking. Whether in search of a place to learn, or an exciting backcountry adventure, Copper Mountain is the place to be.
