Description

Durango Mountain Resort

Durango Mountain Resort, also known as Purgatory, is located near Durango, Colorado, in the beautiful and rugged San Juan Mountains. Featuring an array of terrain that will please beginners and experts alike, Durango Mountain Resort is a wonderful destination for families and die-hards alike. With lower ticket prices and fewer crowds than many destinations in Colorado, is well worth the trip. Read on find out why the destination is worth the effort.

Durango Mountain Resort is lucky to call the San Juan Mountains home. Spanning across a large portion of Southwest Colorado, these mountains are more rugged and remote than many other ranges in the state. The winter season regularly sees storm systems with heavy snows that hang over the range for days as well as bluebird skies and bright sunny days. Purgatory claims 1,325 acres and receives an average of 260 inches of snow each season. A vertical drop of 2,029 feet down powdery snow and varied terrain will leave thighs burning and hearts pounding.

The front side of the mountain is home to beginning terrain and family skiing zones and is a perfect area for children and new skiers and riders to learn and develop their confidence. In addition, the front of the mountain is also home to four terrain parks and steep, challenging terrain.

The adventure expands on the backside where three lifts serve a wide variety of intermediate and advanced terrain. Chair Three and Chair Eight give access to a plethora of groomed and ungroomed intermediate terrain that one can spend several visits exploring and improving their skiing and riding to prepare for more challenging terrain. Skiing and riding enthusiasts generally start their day heading directly to far reaches of the resort and Chair Eight. This section of the mountain includes intermediate terrain, but the real draw is the steeps and glades at the boundary of the mountain. Exploring endless lines while floating through snow-laden forests is an experience that cannot be beat and is often found at Purgatory.

Durango Mountain Resort is also the perfect gateway for a true backcountry adventure. The San Juan Ski Company provides guided Cat Skiing tours in the San Juan National Forest. 35,000 acres of terrain make it the largest cat skiing operation in Colorado, and guests can choose from a variety of terrain including bowls, chutes, glades and ridges. With so much terrain to explore, there is something for everybody and enough snow for all.

For a change of pace, families and friends may want to try a snowshoe tour. Half-day and full-day tours are offered, and snowshoeing is a fantastic way to see the landscape and appreciate the winter wonderland. In addition, moonlight snowshoe tours are offered each month during the full moon. Guests ride the lift to the top of the mountain to watch the sunset and moonrise, and then hike down under the peaceful and surreal glow of the moonlight. Seeing the full moon illuminate snow-capped peaks as far as the eye can see is unforgettable.

The Durango area is also a haven in the summertime, as hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, white water rafting and other outdoor opportunities abound. Summer in the San Juan Mountains is a wonderful time, and those lucky enough to visit the area more than once should take advantage of the summer offerings.

Whether looking for a quiet place for a family ski trip or an exciting winter or summer destination, Durango Mountain Resort has it all. With family-friendly activities and terrain as well as steeps, glades and an enormous backcountry, Purgatory is the place to be.
