Eldora Mountain Resort
Description
Eldora Mountain Resort is a ski resort located 21 miles west of Boulder, Colorado. Nestled at the southern end of the gorgeous Indian Peaks Wilderness, Eldora is popular among families as well as students at the University of Colorado, Boulder. With 680 acres of varied terrain and 300 inches of snow annually, Eldora is worth a trip.
Eldora has many features that draw devoted skiers and riders year after year. Only 21 miles from Boulder and 47 miles from Denver, it is the closest ski mountain to the metropolitan areas. In addition, those that go to Eldora can avoid the traffic, crowds and ticket prices of the I-70 corridor. This mountain is certainly geared to those who love skiing, riding and the freedom of the mountains but would rather avoid the crowds at the more famous resorts.
Eldora has a sound balance of beginner, intermediate, advanced and expert terrain. Further, the terrain is naturally divided across three parts of the mountain. This is beneficial because beginners can learn in a secluded area of the mountain, while experts can lose themselves in the steeps and trees of the Corona Bowl.
On the far side of the skiers right is an area known as the Little Hawk Family Zone. This area is tailored for families and beginners, with an array of green runs served by five lifts. Located only a short walk from the free parking, these lifts allow skiers and riders to learn and build confidence in a safe environment on gentle and groomed terrain.
The area of Challenge Mountain and Indian Peaks, in the center of the resort, is home to the majority of the terrain and a large selection of intermediate terrain. Served by three lifts, this area near the lodge and base area of the mountain is easily accessed and serves as a connection to the expert terrain of the Corona Bowl. In addition, this part of the mountain is home to a selection of steep, bump ridden advanced terrain, as well as a section of steep glades at the boundary of the resort.
The Corona Bowl occupies the back section of the resort and is served by one high-speed quad. The Corona Bowl is loved for its ample selection of steep gladed terrain, where no two descents are alike and one can spend days finding the perfect line through the snow-laden trees. The view from the top of the bowl is also astounding; views down the canyon towards Boulder as well as views of the steep and rugged Indian Peaks and Continental Divide are well worth a pause and photograph.
Another loved secret of Eldora is its extensive cross-country and snowshoeing terrain. The 40-kilometer network of trails, with sections for all ages and abilities, begins just past the lifts and takes visitors on a scenic tour through the Colorado winter. The trails wind through silent and snowy woods, alpine meadows and several wonderful outlooks to admire the Rocky Mountains. For anyone looking for a change of pace and some serenity, this is a highly recommended activity.
Eldora Mountain Resort isn’t well known but has a lot of strengths. Easily accessed from Boulder and Denver, this mountain draws those who love to ski and ride, but not the crowds of the more famous resorts. The resort is large enough and has varied enough terrain to please families and advanced skier and riders alike. In addition, the cross-country opportunities and wonderful scenery complement the mountain to create a wonderful destination.
