Description

Monarch Ski Area is a fantastic mountain located near Salida, Colorado, on the Continental Divide. Featuring a combination of family friendly terrain and services, as well as exciting expanses of expert terrain, Monarch holds something for everyone.

Monarch Ski Area, in operation since 1939, features 800 acres of terrain covered by 350 inches of pure Colorado snow, plus over 1,000 acres of hike-to and Snowcat expert terrain. Loyal skiers and riders of Monarch love it for its fantastic snow and varied terrain, as well as relaxed attitude, affordable ticket prices and sparse crowds. At Monarch, lift lines are rare and the snow is plentiful.

Monarch prides itself on being a family-friendly resort with a small town feel. All of the runs eventually reach the same base area, making it easy for families and friends to meet one another. Further, Monarch is home to family ski deals as well as ski and ride lessons for all abilities. In addition to learning areas at the bottom of the mountain, Monarch has a variety of green runs and slow skiing areas for the benefit of beginners and families.

Intermediate and advanced skiers and riders will find plenty of terrain to explore at the top of four out of the five lifts on the mountain. Over 50% of the terrain at Monarch is comprised of intermediate and advanced terrain. The Panorama lift is an excellent option because a traverse along the ridge top in either direction offers a host of terrain to drop into, including ungroomed intermediate runs and long, mogul-ridden black runs.

The real adventure at Monarch begins at the top of the Breeze Way lift where a 15-minute hike takes skiers and riders to the Mirkwood Basin. Opened in 2005, Mirkwood Basin offers expert skiers and riders an additional 130 acres of challenging terrain, including bowls, chutes, cliffs, glades and steeps of 45º and more. This basin is separate from the rest of the ski area and offers an isolated and bountiful playground of challenge and exploration.

Taking adventure to the next level is the Monarch Snowcat Tours. Providing access to 1,000 acres of terrain just outside the ski area boundary, these tours are an amazing chance to experience some of the best skiing and riding in Colorado. Each day, conditions permitting, twelve lucky people get to explore the bowls, chutes, cliffs, glades and glorious deep powder of Monarch’s snowcat terrain. Visitors can expect between 10 and 12 runs of pristine and solitary skiing and riding, and only have to share 1,000 acres with 11 other people. Opportunities like this don’t pass by everyday, and it is a highly recommended adventure for expert skiers and riders.

Monarch also has its share of terrain parks for the freestyle oriented skiers and riders. The K2 Organic Terrain Park features a top-to-bottom playground of quarterpipe walls and rollers, log slides of different lengths and jumps for the beginner and intermediate skier and rider. The Aftershock Terrain Park features a variety of rails, tabletops and jumps for the intermediate and advanced crowd. Each terrain park is lift-served and easily accessible.

With so much value and opportunity in a wonderful location, Monarch Ski Area is an excellent choice for families, friends and skiing and riding enthusiasts. From family friendly offerings to adrenaline-pumping backcountry terrain, Monarch has it all. Come spend a day enjoying the fantastic vistas of the Rocky Mountains and some of the best skiing and riding in Colorado.
