At Silverton Ski Resort, located in the Rocky Mountains of southwestern Colorado, there is no better place for you to enjoy truly unfettered skiing or snowboarding. Silverton is easily one of the biggest challenges skiers can find in North America. It is the highest ski area on the continent with a peak of 13,487 feet, and the mountain is left in its natural state with no grooming or manmade runs. It’s skiing at its most primal and exciting! Silverton is no commonplace ski area. The staff officially caps the number of unguided skiers at 475 a day, but on most days there are less than 80 skiers on the mountain. There is only one chairlift to the top of the mountain, but because there are no defined runs, you have endless possibilities. You can forge your own path down one of the most beautiful mountains in the world, carving through fresh, clean powder like a hot knife through butter.
The annual snowfall in Colorado is consistently among the highest in the nation, so at Silverton you'll find some of the finest and purest powder in the world. It also means, though, that only advanced skiers are allowed on the mountain and everyone has to carry avalanche gear. However, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience a truly untamed mountain. For skiers that really want to challenge themselves, there is nothing more exhilarating than standing poised at the top of a peak looking down a mountain at unmarked terrain with only their own ability and strength on which to rely.
If you aren't comfortable braving the unknown by yourself, guided trips are available. One of Silverton's expert guides will take up to eight in a party, allowing you to focus on taking it all in without having to worry about getting lost. If you're really looking to splurge, check out the available heli skiing option. It's definitely pricey, but you'll be breezed up the mountain all day without having to take the lift or hike, maximizing your runs down the mountain. And who wouldn't want to ride in a helicopter anyway?
The town of Silverton is a quaint old mining town, not a big party city, but it's perfect for prospective skiers. If you're going to be ready for the mountain in the morning, you're going to need hearty food and a place to rest, not clubs and entertainment. There are good motels and lodges in town perfect for unbroken nights of sleep, and a number of tasty places to eat (the Brown Bear Cafe is a local favorite for breakfast).
Silverton Mountain is open for skiing Thursday through Sunday, December through June, but there are also some other activities in the area to pique your interest if you aren't going up the mountain. Several companies offer snowcat skiing, which involves all-terrain vehicles doing the legwork for you and your companions on great backcountry terrain. Or you can book a guided snowmobile tour to see the beautiful, hidden parts of the Silverton area. And if you're visiting in the summer, you can go camping, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, or you can even take the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, an unforgettable journey through the beautiful San Juan Mountains.
