Description
Telluride Ski Resort is located in San Juan National Forest on the western slope of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. An old mining town, Telluride is now a big name ski area with a huge variety of terrain spread across three mountains. From terrain for first timers as well as bowls and chutes for the veterans, there is something for everybody. Read on to find out more about Telluride, a quintessential ski resort.
Encompassing over 2,000 acres of terrain in a spectacular mountain setting, Telluride has 4,425 feet of vertical drop, a maximum elevation of 13,320 feet above sea level and an annual snowfall of 309 inches. This combination of location, terrain, and ski experience has created a loyal following to this remote resort. In addition, Telluride ranks highly among skiing and riding enthusiasts across the country. In the most recent reader survey in Ski Magazine, Telluride ranked in the top ten in terrain variety, terrain challenge, scenery, weather, and overall satisfaction.
Telluride has a fantastic variety of lift-served terrain, and the interconnected nature of the mountain makes it easy to navigate to different sections. Terrain of off the Plunge Lift on the front of the mountain is infamous for steeps and bumps. The most notable runs down the mountain include Kant-Mak-M, a steep, unforgiving bump-ridden lane under the lift, and the Plunge, a long-time favorite of true bump enthusiasts.
Terrain off of the Sunshine Express and Polar Queen Express access the best beginner and intermediate terrain on the mountain. The Sunshine Express offers a nice selection of long and wide terrain that is perfect for beginners and families. In addition, the Prospect Express allows beginners the chance to safely experience the incredible Prospect Bowl and see some of the most breathtaking views Telluride has to offer. Intermediate terrain offered from the Polar Queen Express offer bumps, trees and groomed slopes ideal for the intermediate skier and rider. An absolute must is Upper and Lower See Forever, an incredible, long and wide ridgetop run with expansive and pristine 360º views.
Telluride is widely noted for its varied and challenging terrain, and has three areas of inbounds, hike-to extreme terrain: Black Iron Bowl, the Gold Hill Chutes and Palmyra Peak. Hiking along the ridge from the top of the Prospect Express accesses the Black Iron Bowl. Hike times range from 10 minutes to 45 minutes or more and gives skiers and riders access to steep faces, chutes, couloirs, and deep powder stashes. Hiking along an extremely scenic ridge after offloading from the Revelation Express accesses the Gold Hill Chutes. An access road, as well as a new bridge and stairway allow expert skiers and riders to select from ten distinct chutes that are sure to test the most experienced skiers and riders. A vertical drop of 1900 feet defines these steep and technical descents, and enthusiasts will love the views and exhilaration of the ride. New for the 2010-2011 season, dedicated and hard-core skiers and riders may hike the entirety of Palmyra Peak. The hike to the peak will take most between one and one-and-a-half hours beyond the Black Iron Bowl, but for those that do it, the experience will be unforgettable. Rising to an elevation of 13,320 feet, Palmyra Peak offers skiers and riders the chance to experience inbounds terrain that is nearly unmatched throughout North America. Steep descents of nearly 2,000 vertical feet plunge below the cliffs of the peak before bottoming out in the scenic Palmyra Basin. With snow laden peaks and valleys stretching as far as the eye can see below the surreal Colorado sky, this is a truly quintessential backcountry experience.
Telluride is a special place in a remote mountain valley. The journey may take longer than to many other Colorado ski resorts, the time spent is more than worth it. With wonderful selections of beginner, intermediate, and family offerings, as well as some of the most varied and challenging terrain in North America, there is something for everyone. Add in the rugged feel and the impossibly scenic mountain views, and Telluride Ski Resort becomes a must for every skier and rider.
