Four Corners National Monument
Description
Four Corners is that area where people can stand in one spot, and they will be standing in four different states at the same time. This is the only area in all of the United States where people can do this. The states that meet at this point include Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona.
There are many National Monuments and Parks here that people can visit, with each state having about four of them. However, the most popular of any of them is the Four Corners National Monument where the four states meet. Four Corners is on highway 160, and it is about 40 miles from the Colorado Plateau. Four Corners Monument also signifies the boundary between two separate American Indian tribes: the Navajo and the Mountain Utes. The Navajos maintain the monument for visitors, and the Utes reside in Southwest Colorado.
The origins of Four Corners as the boundaries of four states started during the Civil War. It is at this time that the United States Congress formed governments in the region to fight against Confederate ambitions for the area. In the year 2009, there was a dispute as to the accuracy of these state's boundaries. However, the United States National Geodetic Survey defended the accuracy; and, today, the Four Corners Monument is legally established as the boundaries of the four separate states.
There are many other popular attractions in the area for people to visit such as the fascinating archeological, dig sites or the ancient cliff dwellings of the Pueblos. Some other terrific attractions are the Petrified Forest National Park, Mesa Verde National Park and Hovenweep National Monument. Although the Navajos and Hopis reside in the immediate area, there have been many Native American tribes that have come and gone over the centuries.
When visiting the area, it is a smart idea for visitors to purchase a map of the area first. They may also want to rent a 4-wheel-drive vehicle; and they should bring plenty of camping gear, as well as, snake and scorpion repellent. These animals abound in the area, so people will want to be sure they are well protected.
