Located near the Denver metropolitan area, Rocky Mountain National Park is easy for visitors to access. The park offers nearly endless things for families to see, do and enjoy. Hiking, camping, horseback riding, fishing, wildlife viewing and high alpine drives are all part of the park experience.
The park has six major trailhead areas and many more minor trailheads, giving access to well-maintained hiking trails that can take adventurous souls all over the park. The national park is home to a wide range of hiking destinations that families can enjoy together, as well as long and extremely difficult routes for seasoned hikers and climbers The most popular trailhead is the Bear Lake Trailhead. This is an exceptional area for many reasons. Many beautiful lakes lie within ½ mile to 3 miles of the trailhead, making it a favorite spot for families. In addition, trails can take more hardy hikers up to the Continental Divide and to a fantastic choice of peaks, glaciers, alpine lakes and technical routes.
For visitors who would like to experience the alpine world without the arduous hike to reach it may do so by driving over Trail Ridge Road. The highest continuously paved road in the United States, it reaches an elevation of 12,183 feet and follows a route used by Native Americans for thousands of years. Visitors will be awe struck by the sights they see as they cross from the east side of the park to Grand Lake on the west side. The road ascends through a variety of ecosystems and finally tops out in the alpine tundra. Big horn sheep, marmots, elk, deer, and an amazing array of alpine wildflowers will await visitors who make it to the top of the pass. In addition, incredible views abound, including the Front Range cities and the Great Plains, Grand Lake, and the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains and Continental Divide. The sights, smells and pristine beauty are unforgettable and bring many people back year after year.
Any trip to Rocky Mountain National Park should include a visit to one of the many visitor centers. Locations include the Alpine Visitor Center at the top of Trail Ridge Road, Moraine Park Museum and Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. The Beaver Meadows location is the most popular and is open year round. Situated near the main entrance to the park, the center includes a 20-minute film about the park, as well as many exhibitions about the history, geology and ecology of the park.
