Pikes Peak, also known as America’s Mountain, soars over the Great Plains and the Colorado Springs metropolitan area. The most visited mountain in North America and second most visited mountain in the world, Pikes Peak is the focal point of the Colorado Springs area; its broad shoulders visible from nearly everywhere in the city. In addition to adding beauty to the area, the peak offers a host of recreational activities for families to enjoy.
An exciting event Pikes Peak is known for is the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Beginning in 1916, the race involves driving a car on a labyrinthine highway to the summit as fast as possible. The modern race takes place during a late June weekend and has 11 different classes and nearly 200 competitors. The 12.42-mile course features 156 turns and nearly 5,000 feet of elevation gain. The exciting race draws nearly 35,000 people to the peak every summer to catch the action.
Lying so close to the cities of the Front Range, Pikes Peak is very accessible to all. For those that do not want to undertake the arduous 13-mile hike to the top, the world’s highest cog railway is a favorite method to reach the lofty summit. The Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway first opened its track to the summit in June of 1891 and the experience has been a favorite of residents and visitors alike ever since. The railway has kept up with technological progress and currently uses a cog railcar that is capable of safely navigating grades up to 25%, and snow removal makes it possible to operate for much of the year.
Beginning in historic Manitou Springs, the family friendly adventure starts moving west through canyons, by waterfalls and through forested terrain. As the trip progresses, the grade becomes steeper and the views more expansive as the train ascends into the world of the alpine tundra. Here passengers are likely to catch glimpses of marmots, big horn sheep as well as hawks soaring high on wind currents. The view from the top is simply astounding. Colorado Springs lies 8,000 feet below and the Great Plains stretch East as far as the eye can see. To the West lie the Rocky Mountains and Continental Divide that have made the state so famous and loved. While the time at the top goes by quickly, the memories and sights can last a lifetime.
After experiencing the unforgettable beauty and grandeur of Pikes Peak, it may come as no surprise that the view from the summit was the inspiration for Katherine Lee Bates to write America the Beautiful. While teaching a summer session at Colorado College in 1893, Bates had the opportunity ride to the top of the mountain and began writing the poem as soon as she returned to her hotel room. A hymn tune composed by Samuel A. Ward was matched to the poem in 1910, and the song, as we know it today, was born.
